Judy M. Christiansen is a self-motivated, energetic
educator who truly cares about the students and the learning
occurring in her classroom. With over 30 years experience in
elementary education, she has had the opportunity to teach
students in both lower and upper elementary classrooms. Judy’s
knowledge and experiences at different grade levels has always
helped her to promote better learning for students in the
grade level she currently is teaching.
Judy’s home community recognized her work with elementary
students in 1992 by awarding her the Harlan Chamber Teacher
Appreciation Award. National awards that she has received due
to her work in the area of mathematics include the 1991
Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics
Teaching, the 1992 Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, and the 1996
Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award.
During the past decade Judy has made numerous presentations
locally, regionally, state-wide, and nationally. She has
been a frequent presenter at the National Council of Teachers
of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Conferences, with presentations
focusing on empowering students to think mathematically in the
numbers and operations and geometry content areas. She has
served on the Iowa Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Executive Board and was instrumental in developing and editing
successful classroom lessons for elementary teachers.
Judy has had several mathematics articles and activities
published in state and national
publications.
Technology has become an important
part of Judy’s curriculum, as she has incorporated Interact
websites and personally developed Internet activities to
enhance learning and understanding in her classroom. She
has developed her own web pages providing a means for parents
to become involved in their child’s mathematics
education. Judy’s interest in effective integration of
computer and Internet technologies led her to serve on the
National Teacher Advisory Board for the National Science
Foundation research project, Case Technologies to Enhance
Literacy Learning in 2001.
Judy’s workshops provide many opportunities for
participants to experience the same learning involvement their
students will have in the classroom. Former participants
have greatly appreciated her practical ideas and the
activities included in her handouts. Come join Judy for
two exciting days as you re-energize your geometric thinking
and increase your mathematical repertoire!
